How to patch drywall? This is the question.

Knowing how to patch drywall could be one of the smartest skill sets you learn.
You might feel unnerved by the site of damaged drywall, but the price to have it repaired by a pro outweighs this inconvenience.
Years ago I paid about $600 for a 5 by 5 foot section of ceiling to be replaced. While I was grateful to my contractor it definitely hurt my wallet.
For some reason I thought that patching the ceiling was out of my DIY league. That said, I also knew that having the audacity to challenge myself in the art of drywalling would come in handy. Not to mention save me some major dinero.
And I was right more than once.
It’s painfully obvious: water and drywall don’t play nicely. Yet for some reason they seem to always mix it up like two school yard kids arguing over who’s got the coolest shoes or something.
Here’s the basic breakdown of this project but make sure you view it for the extra handy tips (ones that will make you look like a pro):
1. Measure the ceiling or wall patch that’s needed
2. Cut a piece of drywall that’s bigger than this area
3. Trace the outline of this new piece of drywall on your wall or ceiling with a sharpie
4. Remove the old damaged drywall along the outline
5. Remove any old nails or screws from joists or studs
6. Mark the location of studs or joists on adjacent surfaces
7. Attach the new drywall with 2 inch drywall screws to studs or joists
8. Use paper or mesh tape along drywall seams (I use old screen in this video)
9. Mix quick-setting joint compound until it’s thick and sticks to your putty knife
10. Apply 2-3 coats of joint compound, sanding in between each coat
11. Sand in circular motions to feather the edges of your work
12. Prime then paint
